Business meets geometry

The Box

Same amount of food. Less packaging. Can you design a better box?

Become a packaging consultant. Build, measure, and redesign a box to cut material costs without changing what fits inside.

Bring this case to your students

The setup

A food company needs to reduce packaging costs. Students take on a product line, examine real packages, and discover that boxes can hold the same amount while using very different amounts of cardboard.

What students do

  1. Build and measure rectangular packages with linking cubes.
  2. Compare volume and surface area, then explore different dimensions for the same volume.
  3. Redesign a package and defend the savings with mathematical evidence.

What they take with them

Students connect the space inside a package to the material around it, and explain why a different shape can change a company’s costs.
