Become a deal detective

The Shopping Case

How do I know if a sale is truly a steal?

Shop with a budget, compare discounts, and figure out what you’ll really pay.

Bring this case to your students

The setup

Students start in a mock grocery store with play money and a fixed budget. They use hundred grids to connect percentages and fractions to discounts, then compare offers and explain their shopping choices. Activities are adapted for grades 5–6 and 7–8.

What students do

  1. Fill a basket and keep a running total within a fixed budget.
  2. Use hundred grids to find a discount and calculate the final sale price.
  3. Compare offers, adjust a shopping plan, and explain which deals fit the budget.

What they take with them

Students distinguish a discount from the final price and learn that a bigger sale sign does not always mean a better deal.
